A virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) template for Aotearoa New Zealand’s electricity market.
Published 4 March 2026
Corporate PPAs are a key contributor to the clean energy transition, supporting over 300 GW of new renewables worldwide. They are emerging in Aotearoa as businesses seek lower energy costs, long-term price certainty, greater emissions impact and energy security.
This standard template PPA is designed to:
The template is part of an industry-led initiative to increase corporate PPA uptake led by Zeale, BusinessNZ Energy Council and DLA Piper. It was developed through collaboration with 18 organisations across the electricity sector and provides a balanced starting point for PPAs in the New Zealand market, aligned with international best practice.
While an appropriate starting point for negotiations, the template is not a one-size-fits-all and needs to be customised depending on the specifics of the buyer, seller and project. It is designed for renewable projects that are pre-construction but can be adapted for use with existing facilities and other PPA types (e.g. utility PPAs, government PPAs).
Template users are encouraged to read the accompanying Guide to Corporate PPAs and seek legal and other professional advice.
Zeale, BEC and DLA Piper would like to acknowledge the following organisations for their contributions to the Corporate PPA Initiative: ANZA Power, Ara Ake, ASB, Brave Trace, Contact Energy, Electricity Authority (observation only), Eastland Generation, Fonterra, Genesis Energy, Invest NZ, Mercury, Meridian, Oji Fibre, Pan Pac, SEANZ.The involvement of an organisation in this initiative does not necessarily infer that the organisation accepts, or is likely to agree to, any specific provisions or commercial positions set out in the template PPA.
